Christmas Day in Bude is a bit special!
How so? Well at 11am on Christmas morning, Crooklets beach throngs with thousands of people watching hundreds of hardy and bonkers souls take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean – and no wetsuits are allowed! Organised by Bude Surf Lifesaving Club, the oldest such club in the country, this annual fundraiser continues to grow in size year after year.
Turn up before 10.30am and you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a wind-up; there will be very few people around. By 11.30am everyone will have gone, but in-between there is a massive, festive gathering. It matters not what the weather chooses to bestow, revellers just dress accordingly. Then at precisely 11am on the whistle, in the region of 500 bathers charge down the beach for the ritual plunge! As proud Cornish nutters, all the males of our household have done it on numerous occasions, even Maria claims to have done it once (although there was very little evidence above the knees – but then she doesn’t normally partake even on the hottest days!)
Luckily for guests at The Beach Haven, all this is just a ten minute walk away, which is just as well, as the car parks and streets nearby will all be full!
We currently have 2019 Christmas week available running from 21st December to Friday 2th, priced at £1395. Click here to book
For New Year we are offering either a 4-night break from December 28th to
(If you wish to book the 4-night break, please give us a call or drop us an email).
We sleep up to eight people in four bedrooms – perfect for an extended-family gathering, or perhaps, two families.
Here’s a great video, by Leigh Gregory, of the event.
Of course after the swim you can stroll back the The Beach Haven and enjoy a more traditional, family Christmas Day. There’s plenty of room around the table for eight settings with all the trimmings and it’s almost compulsory that you light the real open fire (we supply you with a scuttle of coal, a sack of logs and some kindling)! The large oven guarantees that even the biggest turkey will fit comfortably inside. The Beach Haven will be tasteful decorated and there will be a welcome selection of traditional Christmas Cornish goodies all ready for your arrival. We can also organise a grocery drop for you so you don’t have to worry about bringing provisions or be concerned that our local butcher’s have sold out of turkeys!
If some of the family would rather watch the Royle Family rather than the Queen’s speech, there’s a second TV in the bunk-room with an easy-chair and giant been bags. Although with most people having tablets, laptops and smartphones for their entertainment these days there’s no worry about bandwidth as we have a super-fast fibre-optic broadband!
Come and spend Christmas or New Year at The Beach Haven for a truly memorable festive holiday.
The Christmas Day Swim is a fundraising event for Bude Suf Life Saving Club. They provide an invaluable service from teaching youngster safe sea etiquette in the ‘Nippers’ section (which has a long waiting list!) to providing voluntary patrols on the Bude beaches. For more information, see their website and don’t forget to sponsor one of the hardy Christmas day dippers!
